Position description
The Laboratory Manager provides direction, leadership and support for the day-to day operations and facilitates the on-going development of department technical and clerical staff. The Laboratory Manager is responsible for meeting the planning objectives of Laboratory Services.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
• By effectively implementing and maintaining Human Resources systems and practices, the Manager, builds an effective team and fosters a positive work environment within the department.
• Effectively plans Human Resources requirements, developmental needs and staff selection to provide maximum team effectiveness and departmental service.
• Develops and approves staff schedules based on patient care needs.
• Ensures that a contingency plan for staff replacement (e.g. illness) is prepared, maintained and communicated to prevent major impacts on client service.
• Encourages and facilitates staff involvement in decision-making, equipment purchases and changes in practices/procedures.
• Facilitates timely and ongoing communication strategies, i.e. staff meetings, bulletin boards, electronically
• Develops orientation and training plans for new staff.
• Recognizes staff efforts and achievements.
• Conducts performance appraisals, disciplinary and attendance reviews.
Qualifications:
Certification in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized post-secondary institute
Advanced Registered Technologist certification (ART) or Bachelor of Science required
Three to five years related clinical and/or management experience required
Active CMLTO Registration required
Quality Manager, Quality Auditor or Management System Certification by a recognized institute preferred
Completion of Canadian Healthcare Association (CHA) management course(s) or equivalent would be an asset
Membership and participation in a relevant professional organizations
Demonstrated knowledge of Ontario Laboratory Accreditation program required
Demonstrated knowledge of current technologies within the field
Excellent human resources management and leadership skills
Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and professionally with staff, physicians, volunteers, patient families, and visitors
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple projects at a time in a cost effective manner
Ability to perform duties independently and as a team member, with high degree of motivation and independent judgment
Demonstrated commitment to excellent attendance and schedule flexibility
Excellent conflict resolution and change management skills
Demonstrated strong critical thinking and problem-solving ability
Demonstrated computer skills and knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet
Demonstrated proficiency with keyboarding, Laboratory Information Systems (Meditech preferred), MS Office, internet use and other computer software
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and performing mandatory reviews
